PostSubject: TnT vs. Walls   Fri Nov 26, 2010 12:12 pm

This topic is basically a thread will I will post my results from blasting TnT certain distances away from walls made of various materials and I will be editing it as I go on. The walls are 2 blocks tall, 2 blocks deep and 3 blocks wide.

Also if I say 1 block away I mean the TnT is touching the wall in the middle bottom of the wall.
If I say 2 blocks away I mean there is one space between the TnT and the middle bottom of the wall.
And so on and so forth.

Wood (planks)
TnT 1 block away - The entire first layer is destroyed and none of the second layer.
TnT 2 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 3 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 4 blocks away - Destroys randomly on the first layer and none on the second layer.*
TnT 5 blocks away - Destroys the entire first layer except for the middle top piece.
TnT 6 blocks away - Destroys nothing.

*More testing is needed on this.

Sand
TnT 1 block away - The entire wall is destroyed.
TnT 2 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 3 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 4 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 5 blocks away - Randomly destroys the first layer, the lower left and right blocks are never destroyed however.
TnT 6 blocks away - Same results as #5 just with fewer blocks destroyed in the first layer.
TnT 7 blocks away - Nothing is destroyed.

Third- Snow blocks
TnT 1 block away - The entire wall is destroyed.
TnT 2 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 3 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 4 blocks away - Everything except the back left and right columns is destroyed.
TnT 5 blocks away - Randomly destroys blocks in both layers in varying amounts.
TnT 6 blocks away - Same as #5 but with fewer blocks destroyed.
TnT 7 blocks away - No blocks destroyed.

Glass
TnT 1 block away - The entire wall is destroyed.
TnT 2 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 3 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 4 blocks away - The full first layer is destroyed and usually 1/3-1/2 of the back layer.
TnT 5 blocks away - Randomly destroys 1/4-1/2 of the first layer and none of the second layer.
TnT 6 blocks away - Randomly destroys 0-3 blocks on the first layer and nothing else.
TnT 7 blocks away - No blocks destroyed.

Cobblestone
TnT 1 block away - The first layer of the wall is completely destroyed.
TnT 2 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 3 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 4 blocks away - Anywhere from 0-4 blocks randomly destroyed on the 1st layer.
TnT 5 blocks away - No blocks destroyed.

Smooth Stone
TnT 1 block away - The first layer of the wall is completely destroyed.
TnT 2 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 3 blocks away - Same results as #1.
TnT 4 blocks away - Anywhere from 0-4 blocks randomly destroyed on the 1st layer.
TnT 5 blocks away - No blocks destroyed.

More to be added as seen necessary

Keep going. This is very good research for wall building science when we go more in depth with it.

See how far it plows through redstone! Placed on obsidian, of course.

Can you test it on half blocks, and double half blocks?

Brick wall:
1 away: first layer
2: repeat
3: either 2 or three blocks destroyed
4: 1 or two destroyed
5: Nothing destroyed

I believe we should send a person or two out to find clay to make bricks, as they seem to be very hard to destroy, especially by pickaxe. Even a diamond pickaxe has a bit of a hard time destroying bricks.

Brick Explosive Resistance Test

Each wall is 2 block tall, 3 blocks long and 2 blocks wide. The closest wall had the TNT right up against it. The middle wall TNT was 1 block away, the farthest was two.

Its seems, despite massive collateral damage, that the brick wall survived a simulation of a perfect cannon hit, and survived. Also, the time it takes to break brick factors into how much longer defensive archers have to pick off incoming troops that hope to break through using pickaxes.

It is, however, very unrealistic. Gathering enough clay to build a wall of enough magnitude to defend a base is almost impossible. Without massive labor and exploration trips, only miniscule amounts can be gathered. What is plausible is lacing brick throughout a normal stone wall, like rebar in concrete. Stone has decent blast resilience, and is abundant. Checkering it with brick would ad significant strengh.

I have, however, not proven that, it is merely a theory. I will test it right now.

EDIT: I have now tested the blast resilience between regular refined stone and brick-reinforced stone.

First I tried two wall exactly the same size as the ones in my previous test. I left one completely stone and the other criscrossed with brick. I blasted one TNT for each wall, each TNT right up against the wall. There was no visible improvement. After closely inspecting though, one more block survived on the brick laced wall that didn't survive on the stone wall. I thought for a bit, then came to the conclusion that the brick lacing only improves the small wall by a miniscule amount. Maybe the result I was looking for would manifest in a larger wall?

So I built two walls, each 7 blocks long, three blocks tall and three blocks thick. One was completely stone, the other was like shown:

S = Stone
B = Brick

*View from top of wall*

S S S S S S S
B B B B B B B
S S S S S S S

I blasted two more TNT, one for each wall, both right up next to the walls. The stone walls first layer was completely destroyed. The other, brick-cored wall, had the same result. Now, was the moment of truth. I knew that the extra strengh of the brick would only manifest itself once the other stone was out of the way, so I set up to more charges, same configuration as before.

The stone wall had the same exact result as the first TNT blast:

Then, finally, I got my results I was looking for:

Exactly five more blocks on the brick wall survived. This was exactly what I was hoping for. Considering that the blast was slight off to the picture mans left, I have to account for errors.

A blast set directly in the middle of the wall would moderately damage it, whereas a stone wall would be almost completely destroyed.

Conclusion:

Brick does improve wall resilience to TNT but only on a large scale. When on a large scale, it raises resistance notably. I do not know if this is of any help or would improve our defenses any, but it might just give us an upper hand.

This is Cold Fusion, signing off.

Note: Yes sir! I will now start testing half blocks and double half blocks resistance to TNT compared to average stone.

Have we suddenly had a bunch of necromancers join up or something?

I got your results as quickly as I could.
There is no increase in blast resistance of half blocks over their full block counterparts.

There also seems to be no increase in resilience of any of the chosen types over one of another. All four different types of half block (wood, sandstone, cobblestone and smooth stone) have all the same exact blast resistance in the test I did.

Well actually, guys... I appreciate what coldfusion did... since none of YOU guys took the time in the past four months to research it... and fusion did it in his first day...

Maybe we could set up a science team with a science server (server with a bunch of hacked items for easy testing of science)
